Meeting the Sunshine State Standards

In order to improve student achievement, Florida developed an education reform initiative that helped schools standardize learning at the local level. Consequently, the Florida Curriculum Framework was written including the Sunshine State Standards for all academic areas to help teachers identify what students should learn. In 1996, the state school Board of Education adopted these standards, and they were implemented in 1997. The Sunshine State Standards are coded according to subject area, strand (a general category for knowledge), standard (general understanding level of strand) and benchmark (specific level of understanding expressed by grade level).
Example: SC.A.1.2.1

Subject area: SC. - Science
Strand: A. - Nature of Matter
Standard: 1. - The student understands that all matter has observable, measurable properties.
Benchmark: 2.1 -The student determines that the properties of materials can be compared and measured, with instruments such as thermometers and rulers. For Grades 3-5; this is the first benchmark in this age group.

A summary of the Sunshine State Standards for all the Discovering Florida Scrub activities for grades 3-5 are listed below to help educators meet the state requirements.
